Going back to Lubbock to visit -- I don't realize how much has changed until I ... realize it! Crazy how that works.
Talking to Nickolai -- I made the connection about some work - I was thinking about pursuing for a grad application I was filling out last year. I had a plan to combine a multitude of audio interviews about individuals lives from all walks of life into one narrative. In an attempt to create one universal existence -- being human and alive.
People are my main interest. And I have this fascination I guess - to gather stories - to analyze behaviors and try to link them back to events or traumas or positive reinforcements -- How does this person tick? How can knowing this person lead me to knowing about myself further.
Is that selfish to ask? I have pondered this very thing many times before but I always come back to -- we only know ourselves - we can empathize with others but only by wondering how we would feel in their shoes.
So - in knowing someone else -- we know more about ourselves.
more to come but i am tired now... goodnight

thoughts on bell hooks "Communion- the Female search for Love"
I have recently moved to Boston Mass for graduate school which will be starting in a few short weeks. I have become involved in a new long distance relationship which is relevant to this post because of the topic it pertains.
L o v e -- we have seen plenty of movies and maybe even read books (i just did) but what does love actually look like and how do we go about giving and receiving it. With this book in particular, hooks is talking about her personal accounts and her insights about love as a middle aged woman. She talks about a relationship of 10+ years with a man who she was incapable of love. She talks about as men and women where does love reside and what are our preconceived notions about love. She makes the claim that in midlife, women coming into anew and beginning to really seek love in all of its forms. She says that as we get older, the inhibiting factors to experience really love begin to fade and can become more free and self-loving.
-------------------------------------Self-loving------------------------------------
I have heard this time and time again and it sounds wonderful. I am not entirely sure if I can say I know what it looks like or even what it would sound like.
She talked about having to do the work. Which involved going back into childhood, and ...She talked about body image and loving ones skin. She said we need to take a que from the men and love our bodies and with all of their imperfections. Granted it comes easier for men because they are not under as much scrutiny as women but we have to learn to say no! I will not buy into the idea that skinny is beautiful. I will not by into the idea that sun damaged skin is sexy. Healthy is sexy! Happy is beautiful!
But something I personally struggle with is feeling good about myself. I have the "take it" or "leave it" attitude when I am almost certain they will be the one to "leave it". And because I already have this assumption, I can't give or receive fully - afraid of loneliness/abandonment.
I have been more open then I ever have within this current relationship. I know the first step to trust is honesty. And I feel that if I consciously go into this relationship - knowing mostly what I want and expect and ready to give and receive then it will be satisfying.
I have had a crush on him for quite sometime before I actually let him know. And being that I didn't actually know him in person, was the troublesome factor. How much had I manufactured and how much was really him? Granted -- that is a legitimate question for relationships that start out in person.
bell talks about men's unwillingness to talk about their feelings and share. a patriarchal society has taught us that feelings and emotions are a female thing. Guys just need sex. It is socially acceptable for men to emotionally withholding but yet receive. But as bell says, they can't fully receive without giving. For a partner, regardless of sex, to be emotionally closed off, stunts any relationship.
My partner has confessed it is hard for him to talk about his feelings, but I have noticed that when I have expressed fears or insecurities he has been open to hearing them and more willing to share about something he feels.
There are some great quotes from this book which I tried to bookmark with random papers and a leaf that "came"already marking a place in the book.
"Romance is different when two people approach each other from the space of knowledge rather than absolute mystery. No matter how well we get to know someone else, there is always a realm of mystery...Without knowing one another, we can never experience intimacy."
When we came to mid-life, we become less of a mystery to ourselves and maybe that is why we are able to love ourselves more readily. We place so much fear in the unknown. --------As a human, what do I want? As a woman, what do I want?---------------------
There was something else she talked about which I thought was greatly helpful. She called it "romantic friendships". She describes it as such," These romantic friendships lacked sexual engagement but were rich in erotic passion...Romantic friendships differ from other forms of friendship precisely because the parties involved acknowledge both that there is an erotic dimension to their passionate bond and that it acts as an energetic force, enhancing and deepening ties."
WHOA! I am sure that I have these relationships but never had a name for them. And here it is. =)
She goes on to say that these bonds are important through all stages of life even through committed romantic sexual relationships. I have always had conflicting ideas about this -- thinking of it as competing for affection -- having heard the term emotional-affair and I thought that was what it was-- I always felt really insecure about the line between friendships and affairs. My father cheated on my Mother and all of us - I don't want to feel that way again or make anyone else feel that way. I have a tendency when I am in a relationship of distancing myself from guys in general but so I don't have to worry about blurring the line. When really, I should be thinking about it as not putting all my eggs in one basket. Keep my close friends regardless of their sex during all my relationships.
I found the book to be very good with lot of interesting ideas to think about and apply to my daily life and thinking.
Love myself
Be completely honest with myself as well as my partner - family - and friends
Focus on being happy and healthy
Give love and be ready to receive it

rediscovering the power of bathing
Eureka!
the quiet rippling of the water as it waves ashore against my body
the buoyancy of my arms and hands -- they effortlessly rising to the surface of the water
in those moments -- i can let my mind wonder without any regard to time
i can compare these moments to the moments when I plant my feet to ground and look to the sky -- i can almost swear that i can feel the earth rotate as i stand there -- trying to grasp my significance in context with this vast planet
i must say that i undoubtedly agree with Chris Hedges in the interview with Michael Moore in his newest doc Capitalism: A Love Story the environment needs to be the number one issue -- because without the earth we don't exist. sustainability means jobs / food / water / affordable housing
i wasn't sure if sustainability was the appropriate word for what i was trying to say -- so i went ahead and against some factual resources just like our news reporters do on the major networks -- i googled it and here is an exert from Wikipedia "For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which inturn depends on the well being of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources."
i think i used it appropriately? ...
this shall be continued!

Introduction to new works -- 2010 Trial Run Artist Statement
Start from the Beginning
I am a woman.
There are roles that are expected of me and characteristics I have been designated as a woman. I am associated with behaviors or traits that have been classified as feminine such as being sensitive, compassionate, empathetic, and accommodating. Men who display these same traits or behaviors might be ridiculed or even have their masculinity questioned by others. But femininity and masculinity are constructed.
Gender is performed.
And this performance can be linked to identity.
I am investigating the construction of the female identity with respect to the advertiser’s influence. Advertisements are meant to sell products, but they are also selling ideas. They are reinforcing stereotypes as well as exploiting insecurities, which is detrimental to individuals who are unaware of their influence.
I was first really introduced to this idea in my Gender Roles Class. As all the Women’s Studies Classes were required to do, we had an assignment where we had to make a collage of advertisements that were hyper sexualized or exploitative towards women and men (if we could find any). Seeing all the images grouped together, I had an eye opening experience.
Consistently, women are portrayed as passive or even objects. Their bodies are dissected and fragmented. Photoshop has made it possible to alter the images drastically as well. There are even images of women that do not exist. It is a common practice for advertiser to just construct the “perfect woman” from parts of different women. There is also a disturbing trend for advertisers to allude to violence towards women in their advertisements.
Men are portrayed in advertisements as dripping with testosterone. Active and muscular bodies dominate the images. This emphasis on the perfectly sculpted body has had a devastating impact on men as well. There has been a drastic increase in bulimia and anorexia cases among men.
Who benefits from this?
I can’t believe that we as the target audience are benefiting.
The majority of my works feature women because somewhere around 90% of advertisements are marketed towards women. (side-story about CVS meeting)
Even if women are being targeted in advertisements, men should still care about the messages behind the ads. Have you ever heard the saying,
“if Momma aint happy, aint nobody happy”
it’s kinda like that- if women are respected and love themselves- everyone benefitsi wanted to keep this link without bookmarking it

artist bio informal
connected--multifaceted
doing art for me is about coming to an understanding of what i see around me -- it allows me the freedom to make connections to seemingly unrelated things
nothing exists in a vacuum and everything feeds into everything else
(energy and ideas and communication are constants)
if we continue to pull on the cord, we will reach the knot which will lead us to the source
at an early age, i realize the relevance of making art by watching its therapeutic effects for my mother and older brother--it gives me a chance to make some distance from myself and my experiences to try to see a bigger picture
i feel a responsibility to make the world better -- through my art -- i feel i can raise questions about
i believe in equal opportunity
religious and political views cannot be separated from the over all out look on life
what is it... religion/politics and former relationships are NO NOs when it comes to first date conversations-- they are one of the first things that i want to know about--and i am not just talking about romantic relationships but also in every relationship -- can i relate to this person?
